Writing · Drawing · Designing understanding

Complex knowledge.
Made clear.

Authografic creates clearer ways to communicate, teach and understand complex information—through words, graphics and instructional design.

01 / The problem

Expert knowledge is often harder to understand than it needs to be.

Professional material is commonly written by experts for readers who already speak the language of the subject. Learners may be intelligent, capable and motivated—and still have to fight the wording before they can reach the meaning.

We believe the answer is not to remove essential information or talk down to the learner. It is to communicate the complete idea more intelligently.

02 / The work

One company.
One capability.
A first application.

The company

Authografic

The home of our writing, visual communication and instructional design work. Authografic Ltd is a privately owned Hong Kong company.

The capability

Simplicate it

A capability and method that preserves original meaning while making complex information easier to understand.

Not shorter for its own sake. Clearer for a purpose.
The first application

SMTE

Simplified Maritime Training English

A flexible, disciplined approach to clearer maritime training material, created for learners who must master both a profession and the English used to teach it.

03 / How we think

Understanding is designed.

A good explanation is not merely rewritten. It is examined from the learner's point of view, rebuilt around the complete meaning, and delivered in the form best suited to the lesson.

  1. 01

    Preserve

Keep every essential fact, condition and consequence.

  2. 02

    Clarify

Remove avoidable barriers between the learner and the idea.

  3. 03

    Teach

Use words and visuals that help the learner form a working mental picture.

04 / The founder

Jeremy
Simpson

Author · Industrial designer · Mariner · Teacher

Authografic joins together the things Jeremy has spent a lifetime doing: writing, drawing, designing and teaching.

A former Royal Navy Lieutenant, Jeremy graduated with First Class Honours in Industrial Design from London's Central School of Art, now Central Saint Martins. He subsequently worked in Hong Kong, established a specialist manufacturing business in the Philippines, and taught maritime courses in Subic Bay.

He holds STCW 6.09 Train the Trainer certification. His practical experience as a mariner, designer and teacher led to the development of Simplicate and its first specialist application, SMTE.

05 / Where we are now

Built far enough to demonstrate.
Early enough to shape.

The method, working outputs, maritime source material and registered Philippine trademarks are in place. We are now exploring the right partners to help turn the work into a well-positioned, accessible and commercially useful product.
